Manufactured Citric Acid is an ingredient in this energy drink that is less studied but has been identified as potentially problematic when compared to natural citric acid that is found in fruits. Clinical reports found that several individuals reported symptoms of joint swelling and pain, abdominal cramping, and dyspnea after consuming beverages with the manufactured form of citric acid.10

Caffeine amount is important to consider since there are 300 mg in each energy drink, more than two cups of coffee. Caffeine has a lot of benefits, including enhancing mood, promoting a healthy gut, and increasing metabolism, but drinking too much can result in restlessness, irregular heartbeat, anxiety, and nausea.

Consuming 400 mg or more of caffeine is considered excessive, meaning it is critical to keep consumption of these energy drinks down to one per day.11

The additive Sodium Benzoate is typically controversial and is added to preserve freshness. Under regulation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Sodium Benzoate is used quite commonly worldwide, especially in carbonated drinks, but studies have found that long-term consumption in such small amounts may result in sickness — like vomiting, diarrhea, and migraine — and can cause hyperactivity like ADHD in children.12

Potassium Citrate is an additive that regulates acidity in carbonated beverages by keeping pH levels stable. This additive boasts beneficial medicinal properties and is used to treat kidney stones, gout, and urinary tract infections.13

Potassium Phosphate Dibasic or Dipotassium Phosphate is an additive that lowers acid level when added to beverages, but also is a good source of potassium in its supplement form. Studies have shown that people who need to limit phosphorus levels should avoid this additive since it causes the body to absorb phosphorus quickly and could cause headaches, nausea, and diarrhea.14

Potassium Sorbate is a well-regulated preservative with a limit on intake and amounts allowed in food set by the FDA. While in its purest form, this additive can cause irritation of the skin, eyes, and respiratory system, it passed several studies that found it was not linked to any carcinogens when tested on rodents.15

An important ingredient is the Super Creatine, and Keto dieters who are combining healthy eating habits with one of the various powerlifting programs will especially want to increase their intake of creatine. Creatine is one of the 3 top supplements backed by research and science to burn fat, build muscle, and live healthy because it aids gym goers and athletes with performance, recovery, and building overall strength through short-term and long-term muscle growth.16

Magnesium Chloride is just a form of magnesium as a supplement that the digestive tract can easily absorb for proper function of the muscles and nerves.17 A second beneficial supplement is the electrolyte Calcium Chloride, which needs to be replenished and is helpful for staying hydrated.18

Another controversial ingredient is Calcium Disodium EDTA, which is a food additive commonly used to help maintain flavor, color, and texture and has limitations by the FDA on how much can be used. While there is not enough research shown that links this additive to cancer, its most concerning factor is that it doesn’t digest well and can result in digestive issues when consumed in high amounts.19

CoQ10, or Coenzyme Q10, is an energy-producing compound and antioxidant naturally found in the body, though this decreases with age and can then lead to issues like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer if too low.20 Besides maintaining overall health in the body and fighting off free radicals, consuming CoQ10 has been found to help with performance during exercise.

Coffee extract is a great addition in this Bang energy drink Keto Coffee because it contains polyphenols, a micronutrient that has been found to improve heart health, lower diabetes risk and even help control blood sugar levels while causing insulin release.21 Combining coffee intake with a starting strength routine can effectively help Keto dieters lose weight and build muscle.

While the Protein Blend provides a good amount of protein, the milk in this blend can be problematic. For those who are lactose intolerant, this poses a more obvious risk, but for those who are not, lactose is still a natural sugar that makes up the carb count in this drink and should be limited.

Lactose also has a medium to high glycemic index between 46 and 65.22

Cocoa Powder that is processed with Alkali, also called Dutch Processed Cocoa, isn’t exactly unhealthy but is less healthy than natural cocoa. Cocoa is processed to become less acidic and richer, and so it can be more easily used in food and drinks.23

Through this process, the cocoa loses most of its phytonutrients.

Cellulose Gum and Cellulose Gel are two beneficial additives that Keto dieters may find useful. Cellulose Gum is used for texture in drinks to make them creamy, but it has also been found to help suppress appetite due to its high fiber content.24

Similarly, Cellulose Gel is a plant-based additive that helps to thicken its food and drink products and increase fiber content, making it beneficial for gastrointestinal health.25

Three glyceride types are present in Bang Keto Coffee. The Straight 8 ingredient or Keto 8 is an MCT (medium chain triglyceride), which contains three fatty acid chains and is known to help lower blood lipids and can reduce body weight.26

Mono and Diglycerides are food additives that contain one and two fatty acid chains and help water and oil to blend smoothly, both of which are approved by the FDA for unlimited use.27

Sodium Tripolyphosphate or STPP is a salt additive used for pH buffering and emulsifying.28 The FDA has approved STPP for use in food under certain regulations as it poses little threat to consumers, except those who need to limit phosphate intake.

Carrageenan is another additive and natural ingredient used for thickening as well as preserving beverages. This controversial additive has a few studies that show consumption may cause inflammation, problems with the digestive system, and irritable bowel syndrome.29

The National Organic Standards Board removed carrageenan from their list of approved organic ingredients in 2016.

Sodium Citrate is commonly used in beverages to enhance flavor and reduce acidity and has no limitation for use. Magnesium Citrate is used in the same fashion to regulate acidity and is easily absorbed in the digestive system.30

Malic Acid is used for adding a sour, tangy flavor in beverages and is generally safe, although too much consumption can lead to mouth irritation.31

About the Author

Nathan Petitpas

Nathan has been a fitness enthusiast for the past 12 years and jumps between several types of training such as bodybuilding, powerlifting, cycling, gymnastics, and backcountry hiking. Due to the varying caloric needs of numerous sports, he has cycled between all types of diets and currently eats a whole food diet. In addition, Nathan lives with several injuries such as hip impingement, spondylolisthesis, and scoliosis, so he underwent self-rehabilitation and no longer lives with debilitating pain.
