Jack In The Box Gluten Free Menu: 77 Options (Popular Gluten Free Tacos)

Gluten Free Diet | Written by Nathan Petitpas | Updated on 12 April 2023

A white plate with three burgers, with onion rings, is shown alongside a black bowl filled with French fries and a sandwich, a white bowl filled with chips, and a black bowl with chicken, the food is from the Jack in the Box gluten-free menu, the arrangement is visually appealing and could entice people with gluten sensitivities to try the restaurant's offerings.

The Jack In The Box gluten free menu contains 77 options and we’ll also cover if this fast food joint has any popular gluten free tacos as an option.8

Note, Jack In The Box is not certified gluten free since their preparation, manufacturing and storage methods have a risk of cross contamination so those with celiac disease should avoid it entirely and see the alternative restaurants at the end of this article.

But those with a gluten intolerance can choose from some of the menu items below that are either free of gluten ingredients as served, or can be modified to remove ingredients like buns in order to be GF.

Is There a Gluten Free or Allergen Menu at Jack In The Box?

Jack In The Box does not offer an official gluten free menu, but it does have a detailed allergen menu. This menu helpfully includes items that either contain gluten, such as the breaded chicken, or items that have a high risk of gluten contamination.

According to this menu, there are 73 burgers, drinks, salads, and condiments at Jack In The Box that are either gluten free or can become gluten free with the help of simple steps.

Eating Gluten Free at Jack In The Box

While the Jack In The Box gluten free menu is sizeable, some of the most popular items at the restaurant aren’t on that menu.

On a wooden tray are servings of two burgers made of beef patty, lettuce, tomato, onions, and cheese, and surrounding it are fries, and dipping sauces such as mustard, ketchup and chili.

Anything that’s breaded is unsuitable for someone with a gluten intolerance, and any fried items will be unsafe for someone with celiac disease because of high levels of cross contamination from the shared fryers.1,2

Are Jack In The Box Tacos Gluten Free?

Considering that corn tortillas without any wheat aren’t so hard to find, it’d make sense if gluten free tacos were easier to come by. However, the hard shells for the popular tacos at Jack In The Box use small quantities of wheat as a binder.

This means that the tacos aren’t gluten free and are hazardous for someone with celiac disease, as it would be easy to consume more than 10mg of gluten by eating them. However, there are some popular gluten free taco options at other chains, such as Taco John’s.

Is There Gluten In Jack In The Box French Fries?

Someone would expect the Jack In The Box gluten free menu to include french fries, but that’s not quite the case. Some of the variants of Jack In The Box fries, such as the seasoned fries have considerable amounts of gluten.

While there are no wheat-based ingredients in the basic Jack In The Box french fries that might add in gluten, it’s the preparation method that’s the problem.

Jack In The Box prepares breaded items, french fries, and all other fried foods in the same fryers. This adds unpredictable, potentially hazardous quantities of gluten to french fries.

A measly 5.5 oz order of fries has a 25% chance of being well over the 10mg of gluten limit that someone with celiac disease can tolerate.3

This might not be a problem for someone with a non-celiac gluten sensitivity, who can tolerate more gluten and suffers milder adverse effects from it. However, it puts french fries firmly off of the Jack In The Box gluten free menu for someone with celiac disease.

This is similar to the Whataburger gluten free menu, as the question “Are Whataburger fries gluten free?” also has the answer “no,” for the same reasons.

The Complete Jack in the Box Gluten Free Menu

All the menu items below either come gluten free (not certified gluten free) or can be modified to remove ingredients or additives that contain gluten.

Jack In The Box Gluten Free Burgers

There are no gluten free buns at Jack In The Box, but the bread is typically the only source of gluten. As such, asking if the staff will provide the fillings on their own or in a lettuce wrap is a useful trick to make Jack In The Box burgers gluten free.

Replacing the bun with lettuce will also dramatically reduce the carbs and calories compared to the official nutrition information below. This is also the procedure for eating gluten free White Castle sliders, or Waffle House gluten free burgers.

Jack In The Box Gluten Free Example Orders

The first step a person should take when ordering gluten free Jack In The Box is informing the staff of their condition.

This will help them take precautions against accidental contamination, keeping gluten at zero or at least close enough to be safe.4 From there, some gluten free example orders are:

A burger made with beef patty, cheese, tomato and bacon wrapped in lettuce, behind it are the same two lettuce wraps and displayed on a wooden board.

Jack In The Box Gluten Free Order No. 1: Satisfy the cravings for an all-beef burger with the sirloin swiss and grilled onion burger with bacon on a lettuce wrap. Pair it with spicy corn sticks as a side, and enjoy a chocolate shake as dessert.

Jack In The Box Gluten Free Order No. 2: If the staff aren’t able to provide a lettuce wrap for the burger, there are still other options. The southwest chicken salad with grilled chicken is a good, gluten-free option, and it pairs well with the creamy southwest dressing.

The Chiquita apple bites with caramel and strawberry mango smoothie are suitably health conscious sides to round out the whole meal.

Gluten Free Alternatives to Jack In The Box (Popular Gluten Free Tacos)

Taco John’s: Most tacos at Taco John’s aren’t gluten free, since the soft shell tortillas are wheat-based and the steak taco has wheat in it. However, the hard shell taco with either chicken or beef filling is a popular Taco John’s gluten free option.

Chipotle: Most of the items at Chipotle are gluten free. This unfortunately doesn’t include the tacos or burritos, but there are still plenty of alternative Latin American food items that a gluten intolerant person can enjoy.

Chick-fil-A: Chick-fil-A doesn’t have any tacos, but it does have quite a few gluten free options. The chain cooks french fries in a separate fryer and offers gluten free buns, which makes for convenient gluten-free eating.

It’s a shame that those looking for popular gluten free tacos won’t find what they’re after at Jack In The Box but despite that, the Jack In The Box gluten free menu still contains a good variety of foods that are safe for gluten intolerant people, just not those with celiac disease since it’s made or prepared in an environment that may have a chance of minor cross contamination.
