It climbs the bestseller lists. It’s picked for a major celebrity’s book club. My inbox is flooded with emails from readers, mostly women. “This is my mother.” “This is my story.” “Thank you for writing this, I feel so seen.”

I’ve struck a chord I didn’t even know existed. I had written my own narrow, specific story, but in doing so, I had tapped into a universal vein of female experience. The quiet horror of being loved too much, and in all the wrong ways.

I close my eyes, a scene playing out in my mind with cinematic clarity. My mother, sitting in a plush armchair in someone’s living room, a plate of cookies on her lap. The other women, her friends and neighbors, discussing the book. Discussing Eleanor.

“Janet said it was the most uncomfortable two hours of her life,” Carol continues. “They got to the part where Eleanor reads her daughter’s diary, and Brenda went white as a sheet. Someone—I think it was Martha Beth—said, ‘Could you imagine doing something so monstrous to your own child?’ And Brenda just sat there, frozen.”

I can picture it perfectly. The dawning horror on her face as she hears her own manipulative phrases, her twisted justifications, echoed back at her, dissected and condemned by her own social circle. The woman whose entire life was a performance of perfect motherhood, being forced to watch as her friends recoiled from a character that was her mirror image.

“Janet said she made some excuse about feeling ill and left halfway through,” Carol finishes, the glee in her voice undisguised. “Sarah, you’re a genius. It’s the most beautifully petty thing I’ve ever seen.”

The audience murmurs, leaning forward. It’s the question everyone wants to know. I give them the polite, professional answer I’ve rehearsed a hundred times.

“Thank you. I think Eleanor is a character that resonates because we all know someone who loves so fiercely that they forget where they end and the other person begins. It’s an exploration of the darker side of maternal instinct, of what happens when care becomes control.”

It’s a good answer. It’s true. But it’s not the whole truth.

The whole truth is that the inspiration came from a woman who sat on my childhood bed with my soul open in her lap and told me it was my fault.
